Benjamin and William Tatem were Helena, Montana, area miners and mining investors. This collection consists of biographical material of Benjamin and William Tatem (1915-1917, 1949); general correspondence (1911-1948); financial records (1902-1930); mining claim deeds (1901-1948); and legal documents (1903). Mining claims included the Beta Placer mine, Eglanol Placer mine, Knox Placer mine, and Star Dust Placer mine. Benjamin Tatem was born in 1839 in Maryland and came to Helena, Montana, with his wife Lydia in the later 1860s when he became manager of Columbia Mining Company. He later became manager and one of the principle owners of the Bald Butte mine near Marysville, Montana. He was actively engaged in mining in Unionville and Park districts and operated successful mining enterprises at Lincoln.
